Notes
With this collection, Sergio Chierici wanted to stop the memory of some organ compositions born for needs of a concrete nature: their genesis is linked to the inclusion in concert programs of choral music, or music for solo organ, ancient or more recent. Writing, therefore, is somehow associated with the memory of individual circumstances and occasions of music played, particular sounds and environments, the context of the other compositions performed, the different nature of the audience. However, the compositions are united by some elements, which are part of a fairly coherent stylistic path, which was defined in the early 90s with the development of some motets for voice and organ, a selection of which is presented in the collection (with soprano Patrizia Durando), because of their function as archetypes. First of all, the melodies, harmonizations and the general structure arise from the sound transposition of a strong emotional charge, which is expressed through elements of tension, alternating with other moments of rest, formally more traditional (cadences, flat or diatonic melodies, consonances). The stylistic reference is easily identifiable in certain expressions of the musical twentieth century, but often integrated with procedures and combinations of sounds typical of ancient music, making the pieces adaptable to the different repertoires performed, albeit with a specific individuality. A music made up of short but complete fragments, with a language capable of reaching the public, and involving him emotionally.
