The 'A' side - "Rest Is Easy" - combines an Eastern sound akin to THE DOORS circa "The End" or THE STONES' "Paint It Black" with a thick, colourful Rock music. This thins out into a watercolour-washed piece of Canterbury Folk before surging back in with killer strength. Hazy production gives it a 'live' feel which actually sounds great, even innovative, although I'm sure that was more accident than design. It's local band music, but they really ought to be proud of this. "Pitch Black" again has a colour-wash sound which I admit I quite like. The sound sprawls through garage guitar backroom studio wonderland with more self assurance than even the mighty SWELL MAPS had. The jury's out as to whether this is just a handful of above average musicians masturbating beautifully, or whether they have a genuinely distinctive sound. Benefit of the doubt - we like it. SHIVA AFFECT are (or were) EDWARD DEEGAN on vocals & guitar; ED TSANG on guitar; RICHARD A. on bass & NAPOLEON on drums, with percussion for "Pitch Black" by DAVE ROSS.
