Jack Maheu

Profile:

American Dixieland Jazz clarinetist (also xylophone), and band leader, from Plattsburg, New York, and Syracuse, New York.

Co-leader and arranger of Dixieland jazz ensembles Salt City Five, formed 1952, and Salt City Six. Left in 1957 to join the Dukes Of Dixieland. Formed his own band Preview Lounge in Chicago in 1959. Also played with Muggsy Spanier, Art Hodes, Bud Freeman, and Marian McPartland. Rejoined the Salt City Six in 1961. Performed in the house band at Eddie Condon's, until its closure in 1985. Moved to New Orleans in 1990 and continued performing.

Born May 1, 1930, in Troy, New York; died August 27, 2013, in Ithaca, New York.
