Between 1922 and 1966, Josef Jonsson was employed as a music critic at Östergötlands Folkblad.

Josef Jonsson's works are usually composed with a classic frame in late romantic style. He wrote three symphonies (Nordland, 1919-1922; 1931; 1947); Chamber Symphony (1949); a number of orchestral overtures and suites; a Violin Concerto (1960); Prelude Festival for Orchestra (1961); The Coral Reef, a symphonic poem for baritone, choir and orchestra (1916); Miss solemnis for choir, orchestra and organ (1934); Cantata for choir, women's choir, soloists, two flutes and piano (1962); chamber music, piano pieces and several songs.
